University access tsar confirmed

Professor Les Ebdon is to become the Government's new university access tsar, Business Secretary Vince Cable said.

The confirmation comes despite reported opposition from some senior Tories - and an attempted veto by a cross-party group of MPs - to Prof Ebdon taking up the post.

Mr Cable said that Prof Ebdon, who is vice-chancellor of Bedfordshire University, has "considerable experience" and is the right candidate for the job.
