TRIBUTES have been paid to a devoted mother who died suddenly over the weekend, aged 53.
Edwina Carol Smith, from Morfa Bychan, most recently worked at Porthmadog’s Ysbyty Alltwen as a healthcare assistant.
She was also well-known for running cafes in the Porthmadog area, including Y Gegin Gefn and later Georgie’s cafe Bar.
Described by her family as ‘selfless’ and ‘devoted’, the community has been left in shock following her sudden death on Sunday.
The daughter of Jack and the late Annie Owen, from Pensyflog, she was married to Nigel Smith, commonly known in the area as ‘Kippax’.
She leaves behind children Ceri and Aled, Daniel and Medi, Georgie, Tomos and step-children Einir and Osian.
Her daughter, Ceri, paid tribute to Mrs Smith, describing their loss as a massive shock.
She said: “Our mother was in perfect health, having shown no signs of illness.
“As a family we’re still trying to come to terms with what happened as she was so lively and always lived life to the full.
“She was only 53 years old and was so young in spirit. She was known for her lifelong involvement with the hockey and football club, being a keen player in earlier life and was so proud of her son Tomos’ recent football development.
“She was also very happy to see Georgie following in her footsteps, being a keen hockey player.
“Looking after her family always came first, and she was so devoted to her grandchildren Efa, Nel, Cadi, Jac, Gruff, Beca and step-granddaughter, Effi Lois.
“I know she thought so much of them all, and was looking forward to spending many years with them as they grew up.
“On a personal note, my daughter was only born six weeks ago, so it’s comforting that she got to meet Beca.
“Her lifetime ambition was always to visit New York, which she managed last March with her sisters, Eirian and Nerys.”
Her son Dan added: “She always put other people’s needs ahead of her own, and this is only one of the reasons everybody loved her so much.
“Words cannot describe the pain we are feeling, but we have found great comfort from the support we have received from friends, family and the community.
“We would also like to express our appreciation to the efforts of the ambulance crew and staff of Ysbyty Gwynedd.”
