Bowls: Caernarfon on form to produce fine win

CAERNARFON BC claimed another significant scalp in the North Wales Coast Bowls League when they outplayed Section A’s second- from-top side Colwyn Bay Royal British Legion on Saturday and boasted an 8-6 result.

The games finished evenly balanced at 6-6, but the Cofis were then able to claim the bonus because of a superior aggregate of 192-177.

Captain Dafydd Rhys Williams, who appeared last-but-one, made a crucial contribution by winning his game 21-2 and earlier important home feats were by Elfyn Jones at 21-7 and Steve Allen (21-8).

Other action at the top flight was scrapped because of the heavy rain: Bangor City versus Min-y-Don and Beaumaris A against Denbigh A.

In Section B, Llanfairpwll were at their best in toppling the leaders, Rhos Park B, by a clear cut 10-4 margin and Glyn Roberts’ 21-7 solo effort was top block.

Leaders Holyhead’s promotion bid in Section C suffered a setback in a 10-4 defeat at fourth-placed Eirias Park, where the visitors had only limited satisfaction with Jamie Rossington and Hywel Gray handing in cards showing 21-15 and 21-16.

Beaumaris bowlers were out of sorts as they slumped to a damaging 8-2 defeat away against mid-table rivals Deganwy Jones Roofing in the Welsh Counties League’s top flight.

Beau’s only individual successes were John Short at 21-11 and Adam Harris (21-16).

Another defeat was in store for winless Llanfairpwll Village when they received division two opponents Llanrwst, the scorelines going against them by 8-2 overall and 153-118 points in the team totals.

Home team members to impress, however, were Tim Williams (21-8) and Olwen Edwards (21-19).

Placings in Division One: Gresford 79 points, Esclusham 73, Llay Welfare 68, Beaumaris 61, Deganwy Jones Roofing 58, St Asaph 54, Sunny Rhyl 49, Colwyn Bay Royal British Legion 38.

Division Two: Rhos Park 70, Cunliffes 57, Llanrwst 57, Llanfairpwll 55, Min-y- Don 53, Trefnant 51, Llanfairpwll Village 17.

Llanfairpwll’s flag-bearers experienced mixed fortunes in the opening round of the Festival Cup within the Anglesey/Bangor and District Bowls League, as the A team secured progress while the B side were eliminated.

The ties are played on a five-at-home and five-away basis and Llanfairpwll A just about made it by an overall 6-4 margin against Bangor City, whereas Llanfairpwll B were eliminated 7-3 by Caernarfon.

Bethesda achieved the top tally of the initial stage, as 9-1 conquerors of Holyhead, and a 6-4 scoreline was reported by Beaumaris, when they knocked out Benllech.

John Griffiths Cup first round pairings: Benllech v Bethesda, Menai Bridge v Bangor City, Penygroes v Holyhead. Bye: Llanfairpwll B.

Steve Rossington of Holyhead is the new singles champion of the Anglesey/Bangor and District Bowls League’s Monday Competition, emerging triumphant from an entry of 34 hopefuls at his own club’s green at The Park. In the final he beat his 14-year-old son Daniel 21-18.

Prize money totalling £300, depending on entries, will be on offer when Bethesda Bowls Club stage their annual open pairs competition on Sunday, August 24, with a 10.30am start.
