PORTHMADOG v BANGOR CITY
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE
SATURDAY 2.30pm
FOLLOWING two defeats to start the season, Porthmadog will be keen to record a positive result when Welsh Cup holders Bangor visit Y Traeth this Saturday.
The game will reunite City fans with their former hero Paul Whelan, now in charge of Port.
Bangor-based Whelan wrote himself into Farrar folklore by scoring their goal in the 1984 FA Trophy final at Wembley, but there will be no room for sentiment on Saturday when City, who lost their opener 2-0 against Llanelli, go all out for three points.
City have an average record at Y Traeth with five wins in 11 visits in the Welsh Premier, their last success there coming in 2005/06 when a Paul Roberts double sealed a 2-1 victory.
In overall WPL meetings the clubs have met 22 times and Bangor lead by 10 wins to five with seven draws.
Much will depend on Saturday how Port’s experienced back-line, which includes, depending on availability, Ryan Davies and Rhys Roberts, handles the City strike force of Chris Sharp, Les Davies (Ryan’s brother) and, possibly, new signing Robbie Talbot.
Games between Port and Bangor are generally close and this could well be the case on Saturday. Both teams need a win and it could be decided by the odd goal.
