Football: Goalkeeper scores winner for Nefyn United FC

NEFYN UNITED 2 BARMOUTH AND DYFFRYN 1

WELSH ALLIANCE LEAGUE

GOALKEEPER Ian Aikman was Nefyn’s unexpected hero on Saturday after he scored the winner at Cae’r Delyn direct from a huge kick from his own penalty area.

The score was 1-1 with 75 minutes gone when Aikman launched a huge kick which travelled the length of the field, deceived his opposite number and ended up in the net.

It was a happy conclusion for Aikman who had been beaten inside the first 16 seconds!

From the kick-off Nefyn played the ball back to the keeper whose clearance only found Bobby Griffiths and he gratefully made it 1-0 to promoted Barmouth.

The Penwaigs were dealt a further blow on 23 minutes when midfielder Chris Moore had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering a bad knee injury.

It remained 1-0 up to half time, but the hosts were applying plenty of pressure in the second period when the leveller came.

On 70 minutes Jason Jones played a short corner to Gareth Williams and his cross was headed home by player manager John Gwynfor Jones.

Aikman then delivered the coup de grace and Nefyn celebrated a welcome win on the back of their Welsh Trophy success at Llanidloes seven days earlier.

"It was a pleasing result, a good three points and we’re now hoping to put a bit of a run together," said manager Jones.
