Porthmadog v Caernarfon

PORTHMADOG v CAERNARFON TOWN

WELSH CUP ROUND TWO

SATURDAY 2pm

THE Welsh Cup second round has thrown up some fascinating tussles, none more so than the Gwynedd derby between Porthmadog and Caernarfon at Y Traeth this Saturday.

S4C cameras will be there to record the event with the tie expected to be the main match on Sgorio Cymru later that evening.

Both teams have struggled in the Welsh Premier this term although Porthmadog eased their burdens with good wins over Airbus UK and Welshpool recently.

The two clubs have approached the season with contrasting policies.

Porthmadog, under Bangor-based boss Paul Whelan, very much champion the case for fielding local players while Caernarfon, led by a three-man Liverpool area management team, draw their squad from outside of North Wales.

During the summer Port captured a couple of high profile signings from The Oval in former Canaries diehards Eifion Jones and John Rowley.

Whelan’s warriors hope to have a full squad available following Saturday’s heavy 6-0 defeat at TNS.

Carl Jones and Richard Owen suffered twisted ankles on the surface while a few others picked up blisters but all should be available for Saturday.

Caernarfon, hammered 5-0 at Prestatyn on Friday but unlucky to be denied a second-minute penalty which could have changed the game, will have skipper Dave Ridler and striker Paul Addo facing suspension followed their red cards at Bastion Road.

Strikers could play a key role in the outcome of the tie.

Porthmadog’s goal ace Marc Lloyd Williams needs no introduction, while the Cofis’ experienced striker Lee Furlong has netted five times so far this campaign.

Catch the weekend Welsh Cup action on Sgorio Cymru on S4C this Saturday from 7.25pm.
