Felin sgwrsio a big hit

I WOULD like to thank you for publishing a letter last week that has drawn your readers’ attention to the new community use that is being put to the old cafe on Bangor Street, Y Felinheli.

When the cafe closed some months back, a group of local volunteers set about to reopen the room rather than see yet another shop or cafe turn into a flat.

Y Felin Sgwrsio was born during a public meeting in the village. A committee was elected and is overseeing three projects at the old cafe – a club for Welsh learners on Saturday mornings, a drop-in centre where villagers can meet the local policeman, the county councillor, members of the community council or Gwynedd officers on Friday mornings, and a history project called “Felin ers Talwm” where older members of the community are invited to share their memories for safe keeping.

The Felin Sgwrsio is also available to rent by other groups in the village for a small fee, including any political group who would wish to use the facilities. Plaid Cymru held their annual meeting there and as well as paying for the use of the room, also made a small contribution as a gesture of support to the venture.

The facilities are being upgraded with the help of a grant from Cist Gwynedd. The community council has also pledged its unanimous support to the venture and is paying the rent for the first six months whilst the Felin Sgwrsio gets up and running. Having only opened its doors to the public a few weeks ago, the Felin Sgwrsio is already a big hit with villagers. Come and join us for a panad and chat!
