CONGRATULATIONS to Cyfeillion Lln for drawing attention to what is yet another carbuncle on the already ruined face of Pwllheli (Herald, October 2).
Your report goes on to say that the “application was approved with conditions including that a public footpath which runs past the site shall be protected”.
May I draw attention to the fact that it is not a public footpath. It is a public road. Following the unpopular decision by the former Dwyfor District Council to close the road known officially as Byway No 2, leading through Tocyn Brwyn and joining the old public road by the entrance to the caravan park, the Pwllheli Town Council, in a bid to ensure that the local people retained at least some rights, applied to the county council for confirmation that the road all the way to the end of the spit (Eastern extremity) remained a public road.
This confirmation was given in a letter from the county council. The town council then enquired whether the county council had the authority to remove the humps laid across the road by the caravan park owners to control speeding; the answer was again affirmative.
The road is in constant use by members of the public travelling to and from the common land beyond the park, and it has to be maintained to facilitate the transportation of dredged sand and gravel from the harbour bar.
