Learning disabled need support

WE refer to the article in your paper last week under the heading “No support for care centre”, referring to Canolfan Segontium, a day care centre for adults with complex learning and physical disabilities.

As staff of this centre, we strongly felt the need to reply through your paper to the remarks made by Cllr Dai Rees Jones about the services we provide.

To quote: “For instance instead of carting people around the county in white council vans we are now encouraging people to use public transport, with support at first, and then with observation to promote independence.”

Is Mr Jones unaware that these white vans are suitably equipped minibuses for the transportation of disabled persons, enabling them to visit places that would otherwise be inaccessible to them? Due to their level of complex disabilities, it is our opinion that none of our service users would ever be able to travel independently on public transport.

At Segontium the service users have access to varied activities in the community dependent on their ability, and are helped throughout by trained staff with many years’ experience.
