A RALLYING legend who won the Cambrian Rally a record five times has died.
Tributes have poured in for John “Bont” Roberts, from Llan Ffestiniog, after he passed away on Monday morning – aged 54.
Family and friends described him as a good friend, hard worker and someone who always put others before himself.
The keen rugby supporter was also well known through the family haulage company – John Roberts Ffestiniog.
His family said: “Everyone in rallying knew John, John Bont as he was known. He will be missed by all.”
Dad-of-two John won the Cambrian Rally in 1985, 93, 94, 95, and 97. He was also victorious in the Circuit of Ireland, where he won his class by over 15 minutes in 1986 whilst driving a Toyota Corolla, and the Keridge National Rally in a Sierra Cosworth.
He had re-built a Ford Mark 2 Escort to race in the Cambrian this year before falling ill.
Mark Lewis, 46, one of a number of co-drivers who drove with John over the years, said: “This news is a massive shock. The bond is so close between a driver and a co-driver and his loss leaves a huge gap in my life.”
He added: “John was such a talent, one of the finest drivers in Britain. When I first started to rally I saw him drive and thought ‘I want to be in the car with him’.
“Everyone in rallying knew John and they will all miss him, it is a very sad day for rallying.”
