Invicta Water’s approach represents a significant shift in how communities can tackle PFAS contamination. The company’s process involves a unique method where PFAS molecules are first foamed off and then subjected to a reaction using boron-nitride crystals under ultraviolet light. This reaction is said to break the carbon-fluorine bonds that make PFAS so durable, transforming them into non-harmful elements.

This breakthrough could potentially eliminate the need for costly and environmentally risky disposal methods, such as transporting spent carbon to landfills or incinerators. According to Steve Wilcenski, Invicta’s CEO and co-founder, “The excuse that we can’t afford to do it, we’ve taken that barrier away.” This solution also offers the advantage of quick deployment, promising installation in months rather than years.

A Personal Mission for Invicta Water

The drive behind Invicta Water’s innovations is deeply personal for its CEO, Steve Wilcenski. The catalyst for his commitment to solving the PFAS problem was the tragic loss of his sister, who lived on military bases with PFAS-contaminated wells and succumbed to breast cancer in 2023. “When my sister passed away, this became a personal mission, not just a business mission, to solve this problem,” Wilcenski stated.

This personal motivation has fueled Invicta’s largest pilot project to date, which involves treating raw water from Jordan Lake before any carbon is added by the town of Cary. The success of this endeavor could set a precedent for other municipalities struggling with similar contamination issues. As Wilcenski remarked, “This is something that people told us we absolutely could not do. We’ve been able to demonstrate that we can.”

Expanding Impact Beyond Jordan Lake

Should the data from Cary confirm the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of their system, Invicta could become a cornerstone of the town’s 40-million-gallon-a-day water system. This model could inspire other communities grappling with the challenge of “forever chemicals,” as PFAS are often called. “What we’re doing here is the worst-case scenario. If it works in raw water, it can work anywhere,” Wilcenski concluded.

As the pilot project at Jordan Lake progresses, Cary officials are keenly awaiting test results. The upcoming evaluation will reveal if Invicta’s technology can indeed provide “non-detect” levels of PFAS at a competitive long-term cost. This decision could shape the future of Cary’s water treatment strategy and potentially influence policies in other regions facing similar environmental challenges.

The stakes are high, as communities worldwide search for sustainable solutions to manage PFAS contamination. The success of Invicta’s process at Jordan Lake could signal a turning point in this global issue. As municipalities and environmental agencies continue to seek effective methods to protect public health, the question remains: Will Invicta’s innovative approach become the new standard for water purification?
